Hunt for lithium in the NT being supercharged by renewable energy boom
A record number of mining companies are exploring for lithium in the Northern Territory, as the
price for the soft metal hits new highs. Ian Scrimgeour from the NT Department of Mines and
Energy said the level of exploration was extraordinary and 2016 was shaping up to be "the year
of lithium in the NT… driven by the growth of renewables, particularly batteries for electric
vehicles and renewable storage. The renewable energy industry in China is booming and that's
what's driving a lot of the demand." Mr Scrimgeour said up to a dozen companies were currently
exploring for lithium in the NT, with many looking at the Bynoe region near Darwin.

2016-07-07 NT News: Defence unity for Pitch Black
Running from July 29 to August 19, the Exercise Pitch Black will include participants from
Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand,
Turkey and the United States as well as our own army and air force. It is the Air Force’s largest
operational collective training activity with up to 2500 personnel and 115 aircraft.
2016-07-03 Sunday Territorian: More ships on the way US bolsters Pacific presence.
Head of US Marine Corps Force Command, Lieutenant General John Wissler, said the Pentagon
planned to dispatch another 3-ship amphibious ready group to the Asia-Pacific region as early
as October 2018. The Marine Corps Times reported that the ships would likely carry an embarked Marine Expeditionary Unit. That would see an extra 4000 sailors and Marines in the region... the goal of the MEU was to augment the number of Marines already coming to the Top End as part of the annual 6-month Marine Rotational Force Darwin deployment.

2016-07-07 Economic Brief: International Trade May 2016
In May 2016, the Territory's monthly trade balance increased by $38 million to $233 million. The increase in the trade surplus was driven by a $29 million increase in the value of goods exports and a $9 million decrease in goods imports. In the month, the increase in the value of goods exports was primarily driven by a $37 million increase in exports to Indonesia. Also driving the change was a $13 million increase in exports to China.
